Since its formation in 1947, Bupa has been a provident association. It does not have shareholders and is run soley for the benefit of customers. Its strategy and scope of activities are consistent with its founding principle - to prevent, relieve and cure sickness and ill health of every kind.
Bupa is run on listed company principles, but with all surpluses after taxation full invested to improve the quality and breadth of facilities and services available for customers. Its provident status allows Bupa to take a long-term view on behalf of its customers.

Bupa's role in the community Bupa aims to meet, and where possible, exceed the British Business in the Community benchmark of contributing at least one per cent of pre-tax profits to charity.
To contribute more actively to medical advances, the group established the Bupa Foundation in 1979. This independent charity funds medical research to prevent, relieve and cure sickness and ill health.
